3 exercises to relieve sciatic pain in the leg: Practical and effective

🧘‍♂️ Exercise 1: Twist with Glute Stretch

This exercise helps release tension in the muscles of the lower back and glutes, which often press on the sciatic nerve.

How to do it:

Sit on the floor or a mat.

Place the affected leg over the healthy leg.

Grasp your knee with both hands and gently pull it towards your chest while twisting your torso to the other side.

Hold this position for 15 seconds, breathing deeply. Slowly return to the starting position.

I repeated this exercise 3 to 4 times as long as it didn’t cause any discomfort.

🛌 Exercise 2: Lying Hamstring Stretch
Ideal for relieving tension in the hamstrings, which are often shortened and tight in people with sciatica.

Here’s how:

Lie on your back on a comfortable surface.

Bring the affected leg towards your stomach.

Hold it below the thigh and slowly straighten your knee as far as possible without overexerting yourself.

Bend your knee again and repeat the exercise.

Perform 10 repetitions and do 3 sets with a short break between each set.

🪑 Exercise 3: Seated Piriformis Stretch

A tight piriformis muscle can press on the sciatic nerve. This stretch is designed to relieve that pressure.

Here’s how:

Sit on a firm chair or a comfortable surface.

Cross the affected leg over the healthy one (like a “4”). Hold the ball of your foot and slowly lower your knee toward the floor.

Hold this position for 15 seconds without jerking or bouncing.

I repeated the exercise 3 to 4 times.
